Barefeet Theatre is a Zambian cultural movement founded in 2006 by a group of young Zambian artists, many of whom were formerly street children, alongside Irish artists. They came together to use theatre workshops to empower and protect vulnerable children living on the streets of Lusaka.
Barefeet Theatre uses creative expression through theatre workshops to guide vulnerable children off the streets and into safe environments like Children's Centres. There, they are nurtured, cared for, and empowered to reach their full potential.
Barefeet Theatre has grown significantly since its beginnings. Today, we work with over 40 partner Children's Centres across Lusaka and five other provinces in Zambia. Many of Barefeet's members are former street children who themselves benefitted from these programs.
Barefeet Theatre's impact goes beyond entertainment. We use artistic expression to transform lives, providing children with skills, self-belief, and a chance to break the cycle of poverty. Our former street child members are living proof of the program's success, acting as role models and inspiring a new generation.
Barefeet Theatre envisions a world where all children and young people have their voices heard, are empowered to exercise their rights, and can fully explore their creativity to reach their full potential.
Barefeet Theatre's mission is to enhance the lives of vulnerable children and young people in Zambia by providing them with creative opportunities to learn, express themselves, and achieve their full potential.
